Peter DeMott Photography top rated photographer in Dayton
It was a pleasant surprise to find Peter DeMott Photography on a web site called Thumbtack. The heading was Top Rated Photographers in Dayton and as of today it puts my listing as #5. This is just one place that brings together references for various types of businesses.
There are so many places that people can comment on your quality of work and service that it is easy for people to find out more about any business. But, as important as hearing good things is seeing good things. What I mean by that is when you are looking for a photographer it is very important that you connect with the style of work the photographer does.

Enjoying the style and work of a photographer is far more important than price or their rating on one web site or another. I don’t figure that my prices would be considered high for professional quality work, but you sometimes see people making choices purely based on price which I see as a grand mistake. Consider how long you will be enjoying or not enjoying a portrait on the wall of your home, or an coffee table book of portraits from your session.
How much difference does $100 or $200 difference in price make over 10-20 years. Let’s consider that. If you make a choice about a photographer based on a $200 difference in price divided by 20 years at 12 months per year that means you may have chosen a better photographer for about 80¢ per month or you may have chosen a photographer whose work you did not like and will be regretting your choice for 20 years for a difference of 80¢ per month.
Right here on the site you can also click on the menu item “Testimonials” for some ideas about how people feel about my work.

If you like my work and style, I encourage you to share my web site and also my facebook page with your friends. I frequently post images from sessions on my facebook business page Peter DeMott Photography and it is easy to LIKE the page and share what’s going on with your friends. Horse portraits and horse and rider portraits are also frequent on my site because of my specialty in that area.
If you do a search for Ohio Equine Photographer you will likely see my web site listed number one or two on the page. A friend, Sally Shaffer, and I toggle back and forth between the top two listings (that is something that can change from day to day). She does lovely work as do many other equine photographers listed on page one of the search results. Of course locality can also be important with Sally being in Columbus and with me being here in South West Ohio (near Dayton). It is easier for me to get to farms and stables around Dayton and Cincinnati for example. Also, some of the photographers listed specialize in stock photography, show photography and other areas whereas I enjoy my horse and rider portrait work the most.
Thanks Dayton for rating me as one of Dayton’s top photographers. I appreciate any comments and connections that come my way.

Modeling and senior portraits
Ceili is a student that I photographed last fall. Through facebook and her mom I have been hearing about her adventures in modeling.
Caution is the word:
When I heard that Ceili was building her portfolio on a web site called Model Mayhem, I was concerned and mentioned these concerns with her mom. Her mom is supportive and engaged which was a great relief to me. Jean goes with Ceili on every modeling job or event that she participates in. For a teenager this is how it should be. Actually, for an adult caution is also advisable as well. So, I was happy and encouraged that both Ceili and her mother were using discretion and an eyes open attitude when pursuing modeling jobs.
Given the above, I was delighted to hear that Ceili was having success. She has a great smile and enjoyed being photographed. I make senior portrait sessions as fun as possible so even students that find getting their portraits taken usually have a great time.
A smile with international appeal:
Shortly after her senior portrait session with her horse I received an email from an advertising agency in Australia. They were interested in one of the images of Ceili with her horse that I had shared her on my web site. After getting a model release signed and providing Ceili with some addition senior portrait credits to spend, I sent the photograph of to the agency. Her portrait was used on a saddle catalog cover in Australia. That’s pretty cool. They apparently also liked Ceili’s personality as expressed in that picture and with the World Wide Web the way it is, something like this can happen with out much trouble. Her portrait was used on a saddle company catalog cover in Australia. That’s pretty cool.
Here are some images that I sent off to Ceili’s mom to help with some modeling calling cards. She will be using some of these to have leave behind cards and mailers to gain local clothing modeling opportunities.
Modeling has been great fun for Ceili, but she is also looking at college at the University of Kentucky (I believe) and other schools where she can pursue her other passion which is working with horses. Who knows, perhaps she can use her modeling adventures to help pay for college.

I just wanted to get some samples of senior portraits up on the home page of my web site. Several of these students are from Miamisburg High school. My senior portraits are on location usually at local parks, but also at farms and urban settings. Where every you want to be photographed works for me. Once we finish you will be featured in one of my blog posts and by sending your friends to make comments, you can earn bonus points to buy more portraits. In addition, I always give you a sneak peek with several of my favorite images on facebook which you can tag and share with your friends. I encourage you to FRIEND me on facebook so you can see who I am photographing and participate in the sneak peaks.

Lifestyle senior portraits in Kettering, Oakwood, Centerville, Beavercreek….and more
One thing about the internet is that you cannot tell exactly where your visitor traffic is coming from. I can see that people are interested in new ideas for their senior portrait sessions, but I cannot tell if those are students from California or New York. I can just hope that if those students are looking for senior portraits with their horse or how about a young lady who wants her senior portraits with her dad’s hotrod or senior portraits on the farm or with their best friend, then the students in my area are also interested in those things and are also visiting this web site.
So if you want a relaxed on-location senior portrait session and you live in Oakwood, Kettering, Centerville, Beavercreek, Washington Township, Springboro, Middletown, Fairborn, Miamisburg, Germantown, Huber Heights, Troy, Tipp City, or any of the many other towns and burgs surrounding the greater Dayton area, then I am hoping that you are stopping by my web site to see a different sort of senior portrait session.
My photography has an enduring quality and not too trendy. Trendy is fun, but it may not be you and trends tend to pass on by. If I can capture something special about you and your way of being and the things or people that are important to you, that can last a lifetime. I like my portraits to look nice hanging in the family homestead for many years not just while the trend is hot. I like my clients to invest in canvas wall portraits and professional quality photo books or various framed prints from their sessions.
That’s not to say that I would not be up for some urban/graffiti or other interesting stuff, but I want it to be about you, not because it is a trend. So give me a call and tell me about your ideas and lets work something out. Peter DeMott Photography at (937) 478-6222 in SW Ohio.
Senior portraits with horse and dog and even donkey
Friday night I had a great senior portrait session with Ceili (Kay-lee). She wanted some pictures with her horse and some pictures with her dog. As Ceili went to retrieve her horse, we discovered another rather entertaining pasture ornament. It was Cledus the mammoth jack donkey. I had my wife Patty as my assistant for the session. This is a picture of the mammoth jack donkey with my wife Patty. Ceili’s farm is sort of between Middletown Ohio and Oxford Ohio, but for equine portraits (including senior portraits with horses and other equestrian sport photography opportunities, I will travel up to several hours for a session including mid to northern Kentucky, mid to South East Indiana, and mid to South West Ohio)
Since I specialize in photographing horses, I have a little trick in my iphone. I have MP3 files of horses whinnying that I sometimes play to get horses’ ears up or to get their attention. When I played it for the donkey it got his attention, you could see the interest building, several big breaths of air and WOW that donkey can bray. We had to move away and cover our ears it was so loud. He was looking about trying to find where on earth those other horses were and he certainly knew how to make it known where he was.
Ceili was ready with Stormy Jazz and we found a good place where the corn and a barn provided some open shade and a good clean background. Ceili has a great smile.
We took various poses, but at one point I put my camera down to my side and Ceili took a breath and relaxed more. She also reached over and gave her horse a big hug. Fast reflexes and up the camera went and click, click, I got the shot. It seems that in almost every on-location session, there are several spontaneous moments. Keeping your eyes open and being ready for whatever comes your way can lead to some great portraits. Of course you have to know how to set up the poses too. When I do my portrait sessions, I am comfortable with my equipment, my assistant knows what I want from the lighting, so that allows me to focus on my subject (not just camera focus) and be looking for that natural smile and spontaneous moment.
Jean, Ceili’s mom also wanted some relaxed portraits without the horse.
Last we moved to the front yard and took some portraits of Ceili with Nemo. The family has several beautiful german shepherds.
Even though it was very hot, Ceili was able to make a couple changes of clothes and didn’t get too hot. Around here, it has been raining often even with the heat so everything has stayed green. If you want portraits with your horse, please don’t wait and call after everything dries up and turns brown. We may be lucky this summer and have green and pretty all season long. That will also make good for a very colorful fall. Please visit my web site if you want to have your portrait made with your horse at your farm or stable. http://www.photosbypdemott.com . You can also send me an email at peter@photosbypdemott.com or call me at 937-478-6222. For senior (highschool portraits) and for anyone else who loves their horse and wants some great images to remember them by, I come to your farm or stable and will travel some distance if needed (you’ll need to pay a bit more after 25 miles). Hope to hear from you soon.
